Mixtape Vol. 2

April 28th, 2008 No comments

When I started this project last week, I thought that I would be adding 4-5 songs a week of new material and the old songs would just fall off the end of the mix.  However, I somehow came up with 12 “new” songs and had to replace the entire list.  I say “new” because some of these songs definitely came out before some of the songs I posted last week.  Therefore, they aren’t all necessarily new since last week, but they are new to me and still pretty recent.
You can purchase this mix (or individual songs) from here: iconicon

  1. Ladytron – Burning Up
    Album: Velocifero    Ladytron - Velocifero
This record isn’t due out until June but I found a good track on myspace and thought I would share.
  2. The SubmarinesYou, Me, & The Bourgeoisie
Album: Honeysuckle Weeks    The Submarines - Honeysuckle Weeks
Can’t recall where I first heard this song, but a really great track.  Due out mid-May.
  3. Nine Inch NailsDiscipline
Album: The Slip    Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Free single compliments of Live 105.  Expect the full album in 2 weeks.
  4. Tokyo Police ClubYour English Is Good
Album: Elephant Shell    Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell
Really liked their last album and lots of people like their new album.  I think the new one sounds a bit monotonous.
  5. Flight Of The ConchordsBusiness Time
Album: Flight Of The Conchords    Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords
Absolutely hysterical comical duo that I first saw on Comedy Central and now they’re huge on HBO.
  6. Death Cab For CutieI Will Possess Your Heart (7 Edit)”
Album: I Will Possess Your Heart (Limited Edition 7)”    Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
First single off their new CD.  These guys seem to be a love or hate band for most people.  I love them.
  7. Tapes ‘n TapesHang Them All
Album: Walk It Off    Tapes 'n Tapes - Walk It Off (Bonus Track Edition)
Saw these guys a couple years back and the opening band, Cold War Kids, went on to better things.  But Tapes ‘n Tapes is still making some good music.
  8. Cloud CultJourney Of The Featherless
Album: Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)    Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)
They remind me of The Flaming Lips and I really like this new CD. Apparently they have three previous discs that are even better.  They are going to be at Bottom of the Hill on May 13th if you like them.  I’ll be there.
  9. Gnarls BarkleyRun (I’m A Natural Disaster)
Album: The Odd Couple    Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
Should have had this track last week.  Don’t know how I forgot it.  Good sophomore CD from this duo.
  10. ElbowGrounds For Divorce
Album: The Seldom Seen Kid    Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Found this band through Filter.  I honestly don’t like the new CD, but this one track is pretty good.  Pretty cool website though.

  11. Sons & DaughtersDarling
Album: This Gift    Sons & Daughters - This Gift
Go Scotland!  Another band from Glasgow.  Heard this band a year or more ago on the radio. Their new CD is VERY good and a lot more mature than the last one.  They are going to be at GAMH on May 2nd and I’ll be there too.
  12. The Duke SpiritThe Step And The Walk
Album: Neptune    The Duke Spirit - Neptune
Heavily promoted band on Filter.  Decided to look into them and liked this song a lot.  Didn’t listen to anything else of theirs.

Mixtape Vol. 1

April 19th, 2008 No comments

I put together my first online mix tape of new music that I have come across.

I’m going to try and keep this up to date and add new music on a weekly basis (or as I hear new music to share).  New stuff I find will be at the top and things will be bumped off the bottom.  Everything will be in order of release date so the transition between songs might be a bit abrupt.  I hear about new stuff through the Filter newsletter, Rhapsody, Rolling Stone, and then just whatever I happen to come across thanks to bands coming through town or on late night television.

I’m using mixwit because they allow me to point to any song I want and I don’t have to worry if they have it in their library.  It’s free and they tie into seeqpod and skreemr so there are quite a few songs available.  If you get inspired and create your own mixtape, please let me know and if you have any suggestions on bands I might be missing out on, I’d love to hear about them.  Please forward this on to anyone else you think might like to hear some new music.

  1. Tristan PrettymanHello
Album: Hello…x    Tristan Prettyman - Hello
Came across this randomly on Rhapsody and liked her voice. She was a former model for Quicksilver. You can listen to all of her CDs FOR FREE right here and several of her live shows can be downloaded for free here.

  2. The Gossip – Yr Mangled Heart (Live)
Album: Live In Liverpool    Gossip - Live In Liverpool
Also a random find but love the energy of this group.  They played on Letterman recently.  Formed in Searcy, AR, they now call Olympia, WA, home.
  3. Phantom PlanetDropped
Album: Raise The Dead    Phantom Planet - Raise the Dead (Bonus Track Version)
A friend recommended these guys and then I heard them on Kimmel.
  4. Frightened RabbitThe Modern Leper
Album: The Midnight Organ Fight    Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
Random Rhapsody find but I seem to love all rock bands from Scotland.
  5. FoalsHummer
Album: Antidotes    Foals - Antidotes (Bonus Track Version)
Filter recommendation.  They remind me of some other band, but I can’t place it.
  6. The BreedersOverglazed
Album: Mountain Battles    The Breeders - Mountain Battles (Bonus Track Version)
You might remember this band from a song called Cannonball.  Pretty good new album from them.  In case you didn’t know, The Breeders is the love child of Kim Deal, the bassist of The Pixies, and Tanya Donelly, the guitarist of Throwing Muses.
  7. Moby – The Stars
Album: Last Night    Moby - Last Night
Some dance/disco music from Moby. He performed on some late night show and I enjoyed it.
  8. The RaconteursHold Up
Album: Consolers of the Lonely    The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
This record is amazing.  I had a hard time picking just one and I’m so bummed I’m going to miss out of them at Bimbo’s this Wednesday.  This is Jack White‘s band project with Brendan Benson (and some other guys I never remember. SORRY!).
  9. Lyrics Born – Don’t Change
Album: Everywhere at Once    Lyrics Born - Everywhere at Once
Local Bay Area artist with a really good sound.  He crosses over to the alternative crowd somehow.  Liked the last record more, but not bad.
  10. Does It Offend You, Yeah?Dawn of The Dead
Album: You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into    Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into
Rolling Stone had a blurb on this electronic-based band.  Pretty eclectic record but a few gems.
  11. DuffyMercy
    Album: Rockferry    Duffy - Rockferry
Think of Amy Winehouse or Lilly Allen, but still has her own sound.  Much more of a singer/songwriter sound.
  12. Back Door SlamCome Home
Album: Roll Away    Back Door Slam - Roll Away
Young kids from the Isle of Man playing blues.  The lead guitarist is a 20 year old guitar god.  He’s going places. Saw them at the Independent.
