Mixtape Vol. 20

September 7th, 2008 1 comment

Pretty much everything I like about music in this mix. Indie, female vocals, folk, and dance.
You can purchase this mix (or individual songs) from here: iconicon

  1. Delta SpiritPeople C’mon
Album: Ode to Sunshine    Delta Spirit - Ode to Sunshine
This quintet from San Diego has been on tour with Cold War Kids and Dr. Dog, which I think gives a hint to their sound. They walk the line between indie and folk pretty well. This track is off their debut release, Ode to Sunshine, which deserves a full listen.
  2. The GirlsTransferStation
Album: Yes No Yes No Yes No    The Girls - Yes No Yes No Yes No
Not to be confused with Girls from San Francisco, this particular band is from Seattle. This recently released song will be on their full length album, Yes, No, Yes, No, Yes No.
  3. TV On The RadioGolden Age
Album: Dear Science    TV On the Radio - Dear Science (Bonus Track Version)
Brooklyn-based band that has been called the American response to Radiohead. Expect their new LP, Dear Science, to receive rave reviews when it’s released later this year. Enjoy this little taste till then.
  4. The UpsidedownSilver Wind
Album: Human Destination    The Upsidedown - Human Destination
Another northwest band, this one from Portland, just released their latest LP, Human Destination, in early August. You can see the band on tour with The Dandy Warhols.
  5. Fan DeathThe Constellations
I’m having trouble finding any real information about this band despite the fact that they are all over the blogosphere right now. They seem to cross a lot of genres including indie and disco. I highly recommend checking out their myspace page and hearing what else they have to offer.
  6. Pepi GinsbergThe Waterline
Album: Red    Pepi Ginsberg - Red
I came across this artist thanks to Liz over at The Blisslist. I gave her whole CD, Red, a listen but nothing seemed as good as this tune to me. I think the only reason it really stands out is her unusual background vocals.
  7. Ingrid Michaelson – Be OK
Album: Be OK    Ingrid Michaelson - Be OK
Great upbeat song with good lyrics. This female singer/songwriter from Staten Island, NY, has been featured on several TV soundtracks. Her latest project is a CD by the same name as this title track(due out in early October) and the proceeds will be going to cancer research.
  8. Anni RossiWheelpusher
Album: Afton    Anni Rossi - Afton - EP
I’ll just steal the description from the label: “From Minnesota via Los Angeles, 22-year old Anni Rossi is now based in Chicago. A classically trained musician from a young age, Anni is a most accomplished multi-instrumentalist.” Her debut CD, Afton, will be out later in October.
  9. Alias – The Weathering (feat. The One AM Radio)
    Album: Resurgam    Alias - Resurgam
I’m not really sure how to classify the sound of this artist from Portland, Maine. He is known for his left-field hip-hip, masterfully produced electronic sound. This particular song reminds a little of Postal Service with a slight hip-hop beat. He released his fifth album, Resurgam (a Latin word meaning “I shall rise again”) , after moving on from living in Oakland, CA, for eight years.
  10. StarfuckerGerman Love
    Album: Starfucker    Starfucker - Starfucker
Rather simple, repetitive song from another Portland, OR, band but I really enjoy listening to it. Their debut album is due out late this month.
  11. Lykke LiBreaking It Up (Punks Jump Up)
I just like looking for excuses to post more Lykke Li. This time it’s a remix by Punks Jump Up. A well done remix and a fun song to dance to.
  12. TrickyCouncil Estate
Album: Knowle West Boy    Tricky - Knowle West Boy
Trip-hop electronic producer from Bristol, England. This particular song off his latest release, Knowle West Boy, is a bit aggresive but the rest of the CD has a much more relaxed feel to it.

Mixtape Vol. 3

May 7th, 2008 No comments

I apologize ahead of time for the eclectic nature.  This one is all over the place with some dance, hip-hop, classic rock, and indie rock all mixed together.  It’s a bit jarring.
You can purchase this mix (or individual songs) from here: iconicon

  1. Lykke LiI’m Good, I’m Gone
Album: Youth Novels    Lykke Li - Youth Novels
Swedish indie pop artist that got famous thanks to myspace.
  2. CSSRat Is Dead (Rage)
    Album: Donkey    CSS - Donkey
Brazil dance-rock band. You can download this through their website.
  3. Old 97′sDance With Me
Album: Blame It On Gravity    Old 97's - Blame It on Gravity
Considered an alternative country sound and they hail from Dallas.
  4. The Morning BendersDamnit Anna
Album: Talking Through Tin Cans    The Morning Benders - Talking Through Tin Cans
Local Berkeley band.  I’ll steal someone else’s description of their record “’60s feel-good summer pop with uplifting melodies about heartbreak.”
  5. Elvis Costello & the Imposters – Go Away
Album: Momofuku    Elvis Costello - Momofuku
This new record is getting a lot of good reviews for its focused nature.  Apparently it was put together in a relatively short time frame compared to past releases from Costello.
  6. SantogoldYou’ll Find A Way
    Album: Santogold    Santogold - Santogold
This record has been talked about for over a month now and I finally got to listen to it.  Very good sound.  Feels new all the way through.  One reviewer quote: “pulls equally from dub, pop-punk, hip-hop, electro, and rock.”
  7. RobynCobrastyle
    Album: Robyn    Robyn - Robyn
Another Swedish artist.  This was released in Britain last year and it just now had it’s US release.  I like it just because I really like the original from the Teddybears.  I doubt I would ever buy the whole CD.
  8. Mindless Self Indulgence – Evening Wear
Album: If    Mindless Self Indulgence - If
New York City-based punk/industrial/hip-hop group.  It’s a bit hardcore for my tastes, but I like when bands can blend different genres…like Linkin Park.
  9. Mudcrutch – Shady Grove
    Album: Mudcrutch    Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch
People are really excited about Tom Petty bringing this band back together and the record is a good classic rock album.
  10. Jamie Lidell – Out Of My System
Album: Jim    Jamie Lidell - Jim
British electronica producer that is now making songs that you would expect to find on the local oldies station.  I think this movement is being called neo-soul.  The whole record is pretty good.
  11. Cut CopyLights & Music
Album: In Ghost Colours    Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
Australian indie electronic. Good dance record all the way through.
  12. The Matches – Yankee In A Chip Shop
Album: A Band in Hope    The Matches - A Band In Hope
Oakland pop-punk.  Their new release is getting slammed for being all over the place and not sounding like their previous records.  The new single “Wake the Sun” is super catchy but it sounds like some other band so I opted for this one instead.
